Pro Sound Effects Licensing FAQ

What is sound effects licensing?

If the standard license is for a single user, what happens if I have more than one user?

What exactly is the definition of a "user?"

Right now it is me and one other person who only works part-time using the sound effects, do I still need a multi-user license?

I am a freelance editor/producer, and depending on the job I might be working either alone or with a team – can I just buy a single-user license since I am only one user?

So when is it appropriate to buy a single-user license?

Some other license agreements that I have with other sound effects companies require usage reporting. Does PSE require reporting for its sound effects?

I am interested in a custom sound effects library – can you put one together for me? How long will that take?

What is sound effects licensing?

Any time you purchase sound effects, whether it is a single downloaded file or an entire library with 30,000 sounds, you are in fact purchasing a license for a single user. So sound effects licensing is, generally speaking, the act of purchasing a license to use a particular set of sound effects.

This is much like software, where if you buy a piece of software for your entire company to use, you must obtain licenses to cover each separate user.

If the standard license is for a single user, what happens if I have more than one user?

If you have more than one person who plans to use the sound effects you are licensing, it will require a multi-user license. Multi-user licensing is not complicated, but it does require a bit of extra care to put together – this is because PSE takes measures to ensure that we are meeting each customer’s unique needs. For example, if you have six users, we want to license you for six users, not "up to 10 users."

What exactly is the definition of a "user?"

Any person who accesses and/or uses the sound effects is considered a user.

Right now it is me and one other person who only works part-time using the sound effects, do I still need a multi-user license?

Yes, if you have more than one person who will have access and use the sound effects, you must obtain a multi-user license.

I am a freelance editor/producer, and depending on the job I might be working either alone or with a team – can I just buy a single-user license since I am only one user?

It depends on the job – if you’ll be consistently working on projects in conjunction with other users you will need a multi-user license. Many of our freelancer clients will charge a nominal fee to their clients to offset any additional costs incurred by the multi-user license.

So when is it appropriate to buy a single-user license?

If you are going to be the only person who is going to be working with the sound effects – ie. you are the sole engineer at your company, or you are the only engineer at your company who is going to use that particular set of sound effects – then a single-user license is right for you.

Some other license agreements that I have with other sound effects companies require usage reporting. Does PSE require reporting for its sound effects?

No, PSE does not require usage reporting with any of its sound effects libraries.

I am interested in a custom sound effects library – can you put one together for me? How long will that take?

Yes, we definitely offer custom sound effects library services. The cost and production time will vary depending on the size and scope of the library. Please contact us to discuss the parameters with one of our experts.
